Master Naturalists Demonstration Garden at Phil Hardberger Park

Blue Heron Designs is proud to have just completed the installation of the Master Naturalist Demonstration Garden at Phil Hardberger Park.

The selection process for the design/build contractor began in the summer of 2017. Blue Heron Designs – a creative residential and commercial garden design firm was chosen to complete the design/build of the new demonstration garden for the Alamo Area Chapter of the Master Naturalist.

This new garden replaced the original installation on the Riverwalk downtown. Primary funding was provided by the San Antonio River Authority. Additional contributors were The City of San Antonio, The Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Volunteers from the Alamo Area Master Naturalist Organization.

The goal was to create a unique setting for the display and education of native plants and trees that fit into the Phil Hardberger Park setting. Selection of plants and trees were furnished by the Master Naturalist, Phil Hardberger Park staff and Blue Heron Designs.

A portion of the garden was fenced to provide a setting apart from deer. The garden also focuses on plants that are butterfly, bird and native mammal friendly.

The goal is the encouragement of the use of native and hardy adaptable plantings in home and commercial landscapes. This unique evolving garden will provide a location for enthusiasts as well as novice gardeners to see the plants and learn to identify and use them in their own landscapes.
